Hello! I’m Mischal (they/them), a queer, non-binary graduate practicum student with Outside the Box Counselling. I am passionate about supporting queer and trans youth, adults, couples, and families, as well as those exploring neurodiversity, gender identity, relationships, disability, and anxiety—areas that make up my own lived experiences. As a student under supervision, I am able to offer lower-priced services, with a sliding scale. Our aim is to never turn away someone for lack of funds. I can also work with folks across many provinces and territories, including BC, AB, SK, MB, NL, YT, NU, and the NT. My approach is warm, gentle, curious, and at times playful. I use an integrative style tailored to each person, drawing from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Relational Therapy, Non-Violent Communication (NVC), Attachment-Based Therapy, Mindfulness, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Psychodrama, and Gestalt. I am deeply honoured by the trust it takes to invite someone into your story. Getting to know people, understanding their lived experiences, and walking alongside them as they explore relationships, identities, and hopes is my favourite part of this work. Whatever you’re grappling with, I’m here to support you with warmth, openness, and collaboration.

Top Specialities: trauma, anxiety, attachment issues I believe our life events shape us into who we are today. We weren’t BORN with an inner critic, perfectionism, or people-pleasing tendencies! Something happened in our lives that taught us those behaviours. Maybe we learned that it’s less painful to avoid confrontation than to risk rejection or failure. Maybe we learned that to ensure safety, we must be hypervigilant, constantly looking out for threats. Those behaviours likely helped you survive at one time, but now, they might be causing chronic anxiety, difficulties in your relationships, and low self-esteem. I will help you understand your emotions and unlearn beliefs and coping behaviours that are no longer serving you. We’ll learn how your past and present experiences are contributing to the issues you want to let go of, and carve a path forward. Therapy can help you process your experiences and develop coping skills to manage your reactions and emotions. I have experience helping with anxiety/stress/burnout, trauma, relationship/attachment issues, self-esteem, depression, emotion regulation, and borderline personality disorder. I’m especially passionate about treating developmental/attachment trauma to improve self-esteem, foster safety and security, and move towards secure attachment patterns. My Approach/Style As a therapist, I have a friendly, authentic, and warm demeanour. I believe a strong connection with your therapist is of crucial importance, so I take extra care to ensure I’m understanding your needs and perspective. (This doesn’t mean I’ll never challenge you!). I’m also happy to share appropriate information about my own life if helpful and relevant. I believe everyone has inner wisdom and resilience. I respect your autonomy, so I will always support you in coming to your own conclusions and finding your own solutions. But I also don’t shy away from sharing different insights and perspectives, or giving guidance and advice if needed. Types of Therapy After spending some time getting to know you, I’ll apply the therapy techniques that best suit your concerns. I use techniques informed by schema therapy, inner child work, IFS, ACT, CBT, DBT, EFT, mindfulness, and attachment theory. I am also trained in EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy, which is an evidence-based and WHO-recommended treatment for trauma and PTSD. If you’d like to learn more, please reach out for a free consultation! *Please note, I am located in Toronto, and my working hours are as follows: Tuesday and Wednesday: 11am-7pm Eastern Time Thursday: 1pm-7pm Eastern time Friday: 10am-5pm Eastern Time

Are you struggling to maintain relationships? Maybe you feel disconnected, unable to get through the day without negative thought patterns. As a psychotherapist, I work with both teens and adults, specializing in relational and childhood trauma. However, I also work with individuals who have faced various life challenges, such as anxiety, depression, and attachment difficulties. Holding a queer identity and a crisis counselling background, my therapeutic space is highlighted in inclusivity, incorporating anti-oppressive and strength-based frameworks to create a safe, non-judgmental space for you to express your thoughts freely. My sessions often take a client-centred approach, building a collaborative process of unlearning damaging self-beliefs, practicing healthy coping skills, and reclaiming your life through newly formed self-awareness. This is your journey, and I will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan specific to your unique needs and goals. I view trauma as a relational experience. Not only is it often experienced in relationships with others, but it is also a new development of healthy relationships that can assist in healing.

Have you ever felt caught between who you are and who others expect you to be? Perhaps you’re navigating cultural pressures, identity-related challenges, or a lingering sense of never fully belonging. As a second-generation Canadian raised by immigrant parents, I understand how isolating it can feel to exist between different worlds and expectations. Drawing from my lived experiences with marginalized identities, I strive to create a warm and inviting space where you can slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself on your own terms. I am currently a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) completing my Master’s in Counselling Psychology. In my practicum, I provide queer-affirming, pay-what-you-can psychotherapy to individuals aged 14 and older, while welcoming clients of all identities, orientations, and backgrounds. My work is client-centered and trauma-informed, aimed at fostering deeper understanding by revealing unconscious patterns, emotions, and experiences that may be shaping your current challenges. Together, we move at a pace that feels grounded for you, co-creating a treatment plan that reflects your needs, intentions, and goals. Much like a flower that blooms when given the right conditions, I believe meaningful growth unfolds when we are supported in the ways we need most. My goal is to help cultivate those conditions, tailoring our work together to support your growth in a way that feels authentic to you. If this resonates, I invite you to reach out for a free 20-minute consultation. Book Here.

Understanding ADHD If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're exhausted. Not the kind of tired sleep fixes — the kind that comes from spending years fighting your own brain and losing more often than you'd like to admit. Maybe you have a diagnosis. Maybe you've suspected it for a decade and never had it confirmed. Maybe you're a woman who was told it was anxiety, or depression, or that you were "too sensitive," and ADHD never even came up until recently. Whatever your path here, I'd guess you're tired of half-working strategies, tired of starting over, and tired of feeling like everyone else got a manual you never received. Let me say this plainly: ADHD is genuinely frustrating to live with. Not "quirky," not "just a different way of thinking" in some tidy, inspirational sense — frustrating, in the day-to-day, why-can't-I-just-do-the-thing way. That frustration is real, and it deserves to be named instead of smoothed over. You are not lazy. You are not broken. You are not failing at things that come easily to everyone else — you're doing hard things with a brain that runs on a different operating system, often without the support that operating system actually needs. How I Can Help I hold an MA in Counselling Psychology, and I'm also an ADHD Certified Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP) and Clinical Coach — which means I work at the intersection of two things people with ADHD usually have to go find separately: real emotional support, and real skills training. The counselling side is where we deal with the parts that therapy is built for — the shame that's built up over years of masking, the identity questions that come with a late or self-identified diagnosis, the impact on relationships and self-worth, the emotional weight of just being an ADHD brain in a world that wasn't built for it. The coaching side is where we get practical. Insight alone doesn't get the laundry done or the report finished. As an executive function coach, I help build the actual scaffolding — systems for follow-through, structures that survive contact with a bad week, and My Approach Most people I work with already know what they want to do. The gap isn't motivation — it's the space between knowing and doing, and that gap is often more emotional than it looks. Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) — that sharp, disproportionate sting of criticism or perceived failure — is one of the biggest hidden drivers of ADHD struggles, quietly shaping careers, relationships, and self-worth long before anyone connects it back to ADHD. I draw on CBT, DBT, and ADHD-informed coaching to work both angles at once — the emotional regulation and distress tolerance side, and the concrete executive-function side. DBT skills in particular map unusually well onto ADHD life. Sessions are structured, but they flex: there's no judgment for showing up late, needing to move around, or not having a formal diagnosis in hand. What We Can Work On RSD and emotional regulation — the sharp sting of perceived criticism and the mood shifts that come with it Executive dysfunction and procrastination — not a willpower problem, a wiring problem, and one we can actually build around ADHD burnout — the specific exhaustion of running on compensation and masking for too long Self-suspected or undiagnosed ADHD — you don't need a formal assessment to start making sense of your own brain ADHD in women — masking, late diagnosis, and the hormonal impact that most ADHD resources still leave out Perfectionism and shame — especially the kind that's been quietly accumulating since childhood Communication and relationship struggles — the ADHD patterns that show up with partners, friends, and family Workplace challenges — deadlines, follow-through, and functioning in systems that weren't built for your brain Major life transitions Additional Areas of Expertise While ADHD is my primary specialty, I also work with clients navigating addiction, anger management, and men's mental health issues. Addiction: I help clients understand the patterns behind their challenging behaviors. Whether it be substances, pornography, gambling, or social media—I can help develop healthier coping strategies to build sustainable recovery. I also support caregivers, partners, and family members affected by a loved one's addiction, working through boundary-setting, managing worry and frustration, and taking care of your own wellbeing while supporting someone you care about. Anger Management: We explore what's beneath the anger—frustration, shame, or feeling unheard—and develop tools for emotional regulation and communication that actually work in real life. Men's Issues: I create judgment-free space for men to explore emotions, relationship challenges, identity, and personal growth. Whether you're dealing with stress, transitions, or feeling stuck, we'll work through it together. Across all areas, my approach remains practical, collaborative, and grounded in compassion.

you deserve to receive the same depth of care and support that you offer to others. as a neuroqueer, feminist therapist, i support careworkers, caregivers and community organizers who are seeking a space to feel resourced, witnessed, and held in their work. i specialize in meeting you in the place where grief, overwhelm, chronic illness, existential concerns and moral distress overlap. with a background that includes two decades of work in non-profit, this is terrain i have travelled and know well. my approach is experiential, embodied, intuitive, and grounded firmly in principles of harm reduction, anti-oppression, and disability justice. working through the lens of attachment allows me to support clients who want to explore how their current patterns of functioning may be related to early childhood experiences of abuse or emotional neglect. i also support clients with things like obsessive compulsive disorder, body-focused repetitive behaviours, fears and phobias, as well as pre-natal hypnosis. i have developed a self guided pre-natal hypnotherapy program that is suitable for women and birthing folks of any gender, with any family configuration that is suitable for any birth plan, including planned cesareans. i offer all new clients an introductory consultation so at no cost so you can ensure that it feels like the right fit before we begin working together.

I believe in exploring and (re)discovering your inner resources, and nurturing your authenticity in a way that is meaningful to you.

In my journey as, first, a therapy client, and then a psychotherapist, one of the most striking things I've learned has been that we tend to hold deep knowledge about what we actually want, need, and feel. That the signals our bodies and brains deliver to us aren't random. The anger that we might try to push down can actually tell us where a boundary of ours - one we might not have even recognized for ourselves yet - is being crossed. The tiredness or pain in our bodies might be telling us to slow down, to pay attention to an important part of ourselves, an important feeling, that we've tried to ignore out of fear. When we have a hard time getting moving on a project, it isn't a character flaw - it's giving us important information about a need we have, perhaps around relaxing our own expectations for ourselves, or getting more clarity around what we're trying to do. It makes sense that we don't always listen to these inner signals of ours, for so many reasons. In today's world, many of us are busy just trying to survive, and might feel like turning inward is unhelpful or a waste of time. We might fear that we'll discover a part of ourselves that's asking for a change that we don't yet feel ready to implement in our lives. We might have learned throughout our lives that our feelings are too big or threatening to handle, so ignoring them becomes the default. I believe, however, that if we're able to receive support in slowing down and listening to that inner voice, we can start to truly move toward an easier, more aligned, more fulfilling life, with more fulfilling connections - with others and with ourselves. I love to support folks moving through this type of work. I often work with clients who might be feeling stuck, unhappy, isolated, or overwhelmed. I also see many clients who are neurodiverse, and hold lived experience with AuDHD myself. I love working with creative people, people who have self-identified as "people pleasers," anyone experiencing relationship difficulties or life transitions - whatever it is you're going through currently, and whoever you are, I'd love to chat about it! I am a graduate of the Toronto Institute of Relational Psychotherapy and am trained as a relational therapist, which means that I think about the rules we learn implicitly in our lives about relationships - who were we taught that we need to be in order to stay in connection with others? These often-invisible-to-us rules deeply impact how we relate to those around us, but also how we relate to ourselves, and to what degree we're able to listen to that aforementioned inner voice. If we learned our needs were too big and the people around us needed them to be smaller - we'll ignore anything inside of us that's trying to alert us to a need we have. If we learned we had to constantly fight for ourselves, we might have a harder time listening to an inner voice of ours that's asking for some softness. I would love to support you in letting all of the complex pieces of yourself have space to share and room to shine. If my profile resonates with you, please don't hesitate to reach out - I would love to hear from you, and to have the chance to chat about how we can work together! :)

Welcome. Wherever you are right now is a good place to start. You might be carrying something you've held on to on your own for a long time, or you and your partner might keep arriving at the same hard conversation. Either way, I'm glad you're here. I'm a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) offering individual and relationship therapy, in person in East Vancouver and virtually across BC and Ontario. My practice is split evenly between the two. I'm a gay cisgender man, and I come to this work with lived experience as part of a marginalized community. My work is queer-affirming, and I welcome people in all relationship structures, including polyamorous and open relationships. You won't need to explain or justify who you are or how you love before we get to what brought you in. In individual therapy, people often come to me when anxiety or self-doubt is taking up too much room, or when a change in their life has left them unsure of who they are now. I draw on Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and an attachment-based approach. Together we get curious about the different parts of you, including the ones that are critical or afraid, and about how your early relationships shaped the way you relate to yourself and to others today. Over time, most clients find they can meet themselves with more compassion and make choices that reflect what matters to them. Many people come to me because of work. Before training as a counsellor, I spent fifteen years inside the corporate world, in tech and human resources, so the context is already in the room. I know what a reorganization costs and what it is like to sit in a performance review that isn't going the way you hoped. I see burnout as what happens when the demands on you keep outpacing what you have to give, often in a workplace that makes it hard to say so. In our sessions, we work on the conversations you've been avoiding and on who you are when the job that has defined you stops fitting. Along the way, we reconnect you with your sense of agency, so your decisions line up with the person you want to be. In couples therapy, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method. We slow down the moments where you miss each other and look at what each of you is feeling and needing underneath. From there, we build ways of talking and listening that bring you closer. Some couples come to strengthen something that is already good. Others come at a turning point, such as opening their relationship or rebuilding trust. I think of myself as a fellow traveller. I walk alongside you while you find your way, and I treat you as the expert on your own life. I bring training, structure, and an outside view. As an RCC, my sessions are covered by many extended health plans. If you'd like to find out whether we're a good fit, you can book a free 20-minute consultation.
